MPs back Press to play by the rules

Any attempt to enforce Government regulations on Britain's newspaper industry would represent a 'very dangerous interference' with the freedom of the Press, MPs have warned.

The Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee says newspapers should remain free to regulate themselves and moves to change the current system would afford less protection to the public, rather than more.

It admits in a report, however, that the image of the Press has been damaged by recent failures to uphold the Editors' Code of Practice.

The MPs single out the case of the News of the World's former royal editor Clive Goodman, jailed in January after pleading guilty to intercepting mobile phone messages from Royal Family members.

The report describes the events leading to his conviction as one of the most serious breaches of the code in recent times.

Committee chairman John Whittingdale said: "It is imperative that in future both the Press Complaints Commission and editors should be seen to be vigilant in ensuring that all journalists are abiding by both the spirit and the letter of the code."
