Jonathan Kramer made four monthly donations of £332.05 between December 2008 and March this year, but was not on a UK electoral register.
The Electoral Commission said the Liberal Democrats' Richmond and Twickenham accounting unit had voluntarily forfeited the money after spotting the mistake. A party spokeswoman said Mr Kramer had been unaware that his name had fallen off the register. The money had been paid back.
Under the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000, registered political parties must not accept a donation from an impermissible donor - and individual donors must be on a UK electoral register to give money. Political parties and their accounting units have 30 days to check.
According to the Richmond Park MP's website, Mr Kramer is an investment banker living in London.
