Sacked: Isle of Wight paramedic Clive Greedy was fired for allegedly eating celery as a patient lay dying from a heart attack

A paramedic could be struck off after allegedly eating celery he found in a dying patient's kitchen as his colleagues battled to revive him.

Clive Greedy, 46, has already been fired for allegedly snacking on the vegetable after being called out to a man who collapsed from a heart attack.

He now faces a conduct and competence hearing at the Health Professions Council next week, which will decide if he should be removed from its register.

Another member of the team from the Isle of Wight ambulance service, John Jones, also allegedly joked about frying a prawn stuck to the patient's chin with a defibrillator.

It had been on the sideboard but became stuck to a mask that was then put over the man's face.

Although the crew did get the patient to hospital, he died less than an hour later.

Mr Jones and Mr Greedy were reported by a colleague to their bosses after the incident in August 2006 and then fired by IW Healthcare NHS Trust.

Mr Greedy appealed the decision at an employment tribunal. It was initially ruled the most serious allegations against him were not proven and he was given a warning for inappropriate behaviour.

But he was never reinstated and months later, the case was reopened after claims he had admitted eating the celery to a supervisor.

This time he was found guilty of gross misconduct and the panel ruled he should be instantly dismissed. He also had to pay £1,000 towards the NHS Trust's legal costs.

The paramedic appealed but lost. It was ruled his dismissal was fair and he was ordered to pay £1,000 towards legal costs.

He now works as the first aid officer at Island Speedway on the Isle of Wight.

A conduct and competence committee of the HPC is meeting next Monday in London to deliberate the case.

It lists the allegations as: 'Whilst the patient was being resuscitated by a colleague you: a) took a stick of celery from the patient’s kitchen and ate it, b) acted in an unprofessional manner whilst on duty.'
