MRSA cases drop by 20 per cent in London

THE number of London patients suffering from a potentially deadly superbug has dropped dramatically.

There were 20 per cent fewer cases of MRSA in the capital's hospitals between July and September this year, compared with the previous three months.

King's College hospital and Barnet and Chase Farm hospitals saw the biggest drops, with nine fewer cases each than last quarter. But at University College London hospitals trust the number of people suffering from the bug increased from five to 12.

Today's figures, released by the Health Protection Agency, show MRSA cases in London are dropping faster than the rest of the country.

Nationally the number of cases dropped by 13 per cent, with the total in England now standing at 725.

London's superbug czar Guy Young said: "There is no magic solution - it is just down to applying the basic principles of hygiene".

A spokesman for University College hospital said: "Over the last three years UCLH has seen a continuous decline in MRSA cases on an annual basis."
