Simon Woodward, 42, bled to death after being blasted in the left side of his groin, a post-mortem showed.
The father of two is thought to have been shot in a bedroom of Swan Cottage, his family's £450,000 thatched home in Fenstanton, Cambridgeshire.
Paramedics were called to the white-painted property late on Thursday, but Mr Woodward died at the scene.
His wife Karen, 37, a keen horsewoman, was arrested on suspicion of murder.
She was still being questioned by police last night.

The couple married in 1994 but split up last year. Friends said they had recently started living together again to "give their marriage another go."
Their children Katherine, eight, and Zachary, five, who are pupils at Fenstanton primary school, were yesterday being cared for by relatives.
Detectives are said to be trying to establish whether Mr Woodward was shot deliberately or accidentally. But a police spokesman confirmed that officers were not looking for anyone else in connection with his death.
The shotgun which killed Mr Woodward is thought to have been his own licensed gun. He was a member of a local pheasant shooting syndicate.
Mr Woodward worked for Primex Energy Services, which specialises in petroleum markets and is based in Haymarket, Central London.
Mrs Woodward had worked until last summer as a part-time barmaid at the George pub in Fenstanton.
A friend said: "She did not really need to work because Simon had such a well paid job.
"She just did it to keep her hand in and because she was friendly with the landlady.
"She and Simon had been having problems and split up for quite a long time before getting back together again recently.
"She did have another boyfriend for a bit while she was apart from Simon. Obviously, he is now devastated."
