My ordeal after moped mugging

A cyclist attacked by moped-riding muggers has spoken of her ordeal for the first time.

Theatre producer Jane Gauntlett, 26, spent two weeks in a coma after the attack in Harrow Road, near Paddington, last year. Doctors feared she would be left with brain damage due to the severity of the attack by the robbers, who made off with her handbag.

Ms Gauntlett revealed how she will suffer epileptic fits for the rest of her life and told how she has overcome her fear of cycling.

She said: "I was more afraid of not actually being able to ride my bike again than of being mugged again. The muggers had broken my right eye socket in two places - above and below the eye, and my collarbone too.

"But the real problem was inside my skull, there was swelling in my brain and blood clots. Doctors had to operate and remove a piece of my skull to get out the clots and relieve the pressure."

Ms Gauntlett paid tribute to the team at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen's Square in Holborn. Last summer she booked the King's Head Theatre in Islington for her debut production, The Dybbuk, and the play opened to good reviews last month.
