My ride to work: Holloway to Westminster
30 October 2007
From Holloway to Westminster, taking the cycle route that runs parallel to Camden Road, then goes through Somers Town. South of Euston Road, there is a pretty safe route along Tavistock Place, then down St Martin's Lane. Only Trafalgar Square is problematic, although it has been much better since they closed the northern side to traffic. Then Horse Guards Road and Broadway.
Distance
Five miles, the first section pleasantly downhill after a climb, then flat.
Weather
The rain had just stopped, so cool and perfect. Was in my suit but did not get overly hot.
Obstacles
Apart from the odd van reversing into my path, the only drawback to this route is that there seem to be permanent roadworks in Tavistock Place. Theoretically, this is the best cycle route in London as it is segregated and by now most drivers have got used to the idea - but every utility seems to want to dig up the cycle section and this forces hundreds of riders into dangerous manoeuvres.
Joys
It was one of those trips that make you wonder why everyone does not cycle in central London. Cyclists outnumbered other road users on many parts of the route and cycling in the early morning, when London feels clean and fresh, is an unbelievable pleasure.
Time taken
Twenty-five minutes, rather faster than usual. Had given myself half an hour to arrive in time to speak at a conference, which was cutting it fine.
Distractions
Ignored phone ringing. It was conference organisers fretting. They needn't have.
