A-level art student Nassirudeen Osawe, known as Nass, was stabbed to death five days before his 17th birthday by a teenage gang member who thought he had given him a dirty look.
Nass was attacked in front of shoppers in Upper Street, Islington, at Christmas last year as he and two friends returned from the sales.
Ahmet Gomulu, 18, from Enfield, has been convicted of murder by a jury at the Old Bailey. He was also found guilty of wounding one of Nass's friends with intent. He will be sentenced next month.
As Nass stepped into to try to protect his friend, Gomulu laughed and stabbed him in the heart and leg. His friend survived but Nass died at the scene.
Today Nass's mother Fulera Idriss said: "Nothing can bring back our beloved and precious son, brother and friend. His passing away has caused unbearable pain and suffering. Justice has been done. We urge all youths to put down their knives and respect each other and most of all respect life."
Nass, from Highbury, was a student at St Charles Catholic Sixth Form College in North Kensington where he was considered a model student.
