National Theatre technician in £9,000 benefits fraud given suspended jail sentence

A man who worked at the National Theatre while fraudulently claiming more than £9,000 in benefits has been given a three-month suspended prison sentence.

David Gregory, 46, claimed housing and council tax benefit despite working as a stage technician for two years. He had failed to tell Croydon council of the job and illegally continued to claim £9,400 in benefits between December 2005 and January 2007.

Gregory, of Brixton was found guilty at Croydon crown court of dishonestly failing to notify a change in his circumstances and sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for 18 months, and placed under a three-month curfew.

He was also ordered to pay back the money, as well as £10,000 court costs to Croydon council.
