New fleet of Tube trains tested on Victoria line

A fleet of new trains is being tested on the Victoria line.

They are running at night when the network is closed, and will enter passenger service next year.

Once the full £900 million upgrade of the line is finished, London Underground says there will be more trains and a faster service.

David Waboso, LU engineering director, said the new 47-train fleet will offer more room and improved seating and standing arrangements, along with better accessibility for wheelchair users.

Meanwhile, old ventilation shafts are being widened and new ones installed.

A state-of-the-art signalling system, which continually measures the distance between trains, will allow 33 an hour to run in each direction during rush hour rather than the current 28.

Mr Waboso said the full upgrade was not due to be completed by 2013 but everything is "on course" to finish before the Olympics.

He said the improvements would mean a reduction in average journey times of about 16 per cent.

The line is currently closing earlier in the evenings from Monday to Friday. This was originally scheduled to last until November but may have to continue into the New Year to ensure all refurbishment work is completed ahead of time.
