New mum Sophie makes her first public appearance since the birth of baby James

The Countess of Wessex enjoyed her first public outing since the birth of her second child yesterday accompanied by the Queen.

Sophie, 42, looked radiant as she and husband Prince Edward, 43, joined the Royal Family at a church service in Sandringham, Norfolk.

The Countess, who also has a four-year-old daughter Lady Louise, told well-wishers that her new-born son James, who arrived two weeks ago, were "doing well".

The Countess of Wessex was driven to the church service in Sandringham with the Queen

Sophie arrived with the Queen for the service at the St Mary Magdalene Church on the Sandringham estate. They were driven from Sandringham house for the service.

In onlooker who chatted to the Countess said: "Sophie told me the baby was very good and that Lady Louise loves him."

Sophie was greeted on the church steps by a crowd of around 1,000 people, many of whom applauded her as she entered the service.

Rosemary Wilson, 66, from Grimesthorpe, said: "Sophie looked lovely. It's nice to see her out and about again after having the baby."

Jennie Cook, 34, of King's Lynn, Norfolk, added: Sophie looked beautiful - happy and fulfilled."

The Queen, wearing a pale pink coat and hat, was handed flowers by 50 children following the service.

Also in attendace was the Princess Royal and her husband, Admiral Timothy Laurence, the Duke of Edinburgh, Lady Sarah Chatto and her husband Daniel.

The Queen and the Duke, who traditionally spend Christmas and New Year at Sandringham, listened to a sermon from the Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Rev Graham James, who referred to houses in the area lit up with bright decorations as a "minor ecological disaster".

The Royal family also enjoyed a shooting party on the estate over the weekend.

The Countess gave birth to her son after a caesarean at Frinley Park NHS hospital in Surrey.

The tot, who weighed 6lb 2oz, is the Queen's eighth grandchild and is eighth in line for the throne.
