Nick Clegg announces review of RAF Chinook disaster

An independent review has been ordered into the fatal RAF Chinook helicopter crash on the Mull of Kintyre, Nick Clegg told MPs today.

The Deputy Prime Minister said a "respected lawyer" would lead the inquiry into the 1994 accident, which killed all 29 people on board.

Senior police, Army and MI5 officers were among the dead when it crashed in fog on a hillside during a flight from Belfast to Inverness. An initial RAF inquiry ruled Flight Lieutenants Jonathan Tapper and Richard Cook were guilty of "gross negligence" for flying too low and too fast.

Campaigners have called for them to be cleared after leaked documents suggested the craft was brought down by computer software failures.

Tory MP James Arbuthnot, chairman of the Commons defence committee, raised the case at PM's Questions, with Mr Clegg standing in for David Cameron.
