Noise in pubs reaches level of power drill

Noise levels inside some London pubs are so high it is like standing next to a power drill, according to a new report.

The "dangerous" levels - up to 90 decibels - have been reported in at least five venues in the Harrow area.

Damage to hearing can occur after only two-and-a-half hours exposed to such high noise levels, according to Harrow council.

The findings emerged after health and safety officers toured the country to check that venues were in keeping with noise at work regulations, which came into force last year.

Harrow council suggests pubs should move loudspeakers away from bar areas and provide staff with ear plugs.
