Number of new homes doubles

The number of new homes being built in the capital has risen sharply.

Government figures show the number of private homes started in London between April and June was nearly double the amount of the first three months of the year.

Work began on 5,260 units, the highest figure since the last quarter of 2005. This compares with 2,740 private homes started in the previous three months and 2,100 in the final three months of last year - the lowest of the century.

A Communities Department spokesman said: "Despite the economic pressures, developers are keeping the industry moving."
