Charlotte Ashburner, 43, and Jane O'Connor, 49, set sail from Greenwich in May last year on Pouncer, a 28ft boat. They said they were fed up with NHS life.

Dr Ashburner, of Greenwich, was an experienced sailor, but novice Ms O'Connor spent the first few days being seasick.

They sailed to the Norwegian Arctic Circle and back and then across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. Ms O'Connor, of Alexandra Palace, said: "Crossing the Arctic Circle, taking pictures of the midnight sun was a real highlight and being circled by huge fin whales was awesome."

The pair arrived home on Sunday, Ms O'Connor turning up for work the next day.
