Octuplets' mother: All my babies are a blessing
30 January 2009
In the first public statement since Monday's births the mother called her newborns "a blessing".
The unnamed woman, who already has six children and lives with her parents in Whittier, Los Angeles, said: "The babies continue to grow strong every day and make good progress. My family and I are ecstatic. Needless to say, the eighth was a surprise to us all, but a blessing as well."
Today her mother, named in America as Angela Suleman, said the family had not expected the fertility treatment to result in eight more babies.
Mrs Suleman, who admitted it will be "difficult" raising the children, said: "They all (embryos) happened to take. I looked at those babies. They are so beautiful."
Doctors at California's Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Centre described the mother as an "outstanding individual". They added: "She was willing to do whatever was necessary to get the best possible outcome."
Five of the boys and the two girls are breathing on their own, while one boy is using an oxygen tube.
