Okay so far... how Games plan is going
22 October 2007
Innovative designs by architects HOK Sport for the 80,000-capacity main stadium will be unveiled early next month. Detailed plans were seen by the Olympic board last week. While the roof will cover only two-thirds of spectators, the ODA says this will not affect competitors and offers more protection from the elements than the stadia at the Athens and Sydney Games. Crucially, it will save millions on steel costs. In a further cost-saving measure, the Olympic Delivery Authority has opted for a more shallow bowl for the venue to economise on expensive earthworks. The stadium will be "wrapped" in a 65ft-high polypropylene cover decorated with art.
AQUATICS CENTRE
Unease spread over the pool project when construction firms Eiffel and then Hochtief pulled out of the tender process, leaving Balfour Beatty as the sole bidder for the contract, expected to be about £150 million. ODA chief executive David Higgins insists this is not a problem and they have a "plan B". The aquatics centre site is a flurry of activity - occupying some of the 1,000 workers now on the Games site. Demolition of around 20 buildings on the site has been followed by earthworks. The ODA has been in talks with the University of East London about using the facility after the Games. The local boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Newham have lobbied hard to ensure the pools have moveable floors, making them adaptable for leisure use.
OLYMPIC VILLAGE
A public consultation is underway on the Olympic village, which will accommodate 17,000 athletes and officials during the Games. Earthworks on the site in the east of the park began last month and developer Lend Lease has appointed a panel of 47 architects to work on designs before building work starts in the middle of next year. After the Games, one third of the 3,800 homes will be "affordable", the ODA says.
VELODROME
Detailed plans for the 6,000-capacity cycling venue will be developed over the next 15 months following the recent appointment of architect Hopkins - designer of the Glyndebourne Opera House and Lord's Mound Stand. The ODA will choose one of the six companies shortlisted to build the venue early next year with construction due to begin in 2009.
CANOE COURSE
The original site of the canoe slalom in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, is almost certain to be abandoned because it is too heavily contaminated with petrol, oil and tar - this despite initial surveys showing it was fit for purpose. The ODA plans to move the course six miles south of the original, still in the borough of Broxbourne and closer to the Olympic Park. Such changes are due to be approved later this year by the International Olympic Committee.
SPONSORSHIP
The organising committee, Locog, is marginally ahead of its target of raising £625 million in sponsorship. So far, it has signed up Lloyds TSB, adidas and EDF Energy for an estimated total of £200 million. Negotiations are at an advanced stage with British Airways and BT. Tesco is also being linked with a ..1. deal, although a supermarket category would have to be created. Locog chief executive Paul Deighton says he hopes to complete two more deals this year and a total of four before next summer's Beijing Games. He says sponsorship is his main focus as the TV deals have already been fixed.
OLYMPICS BY NUMBERS
* 1,740 - days before the opening ceremony
* £9.3bn - Olympics budget
* 500,000 - spectators every day
* £100m - sponsorship deal by adidas
* 17,000 - athletes and officials
