London Mayor Boris Johnson is in a dispute with ministers over who will foot the bill for any budget overruns
Olympics chiefs are today ordered to take action to prevent the cost of the 2012 Games spiralling out of control.
Britain's spending watchdog warns that the £9.3billion budget for staging the event in London could be under threat because of uncertainty over construction deals, security and the future use of sports facilities.
The National Audit Office report raises the bleak prospect of venues, including the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium, being left to decay after the sporting showcase ends.
It was published as London Mayor Boris Johnson admitted he is involved in 'a dispute' with ministers over who will foot the bill for any Olympic budget overruns.
The NAO says the Olympic Delivery Authority faces 'formidable' challenges to stage the Games on budget, now four times the Government's original £2.4billion estimate.
Problems include the lack of a deal for construction of the £1billion-plus Olympic Village in Stratford, East London.
The report also highlights concerns over the absence of fully costed security plans.
