Olympic stadium is dubbed the 'vol-au-vent'

It will cost £500 million to build and will be the centrepiece of the London Olympics.

But it seems architectural experts believe the Olympic stadium in Stratford resembles a kitsch canapÈ.

A poll of architects and building design experts by Building magazine to find a nickname for the circular stadium came up with a runaway winner: the volauvent.

Magazine news editor Sarah Richardson said: "These days no major new building is complete without a nickname, usually coined long before the first brick is laid.

"So when the designs for the Olympic stadium were unveiled last week, we asked readers to send in their suggestions.

"Although the stadium was instantly denounced as uninspired, it certainly inspired the imaginations of our readers.

"We had all sorts of suggestions - from Frisbees to hovercrafts and potties to jelly moulds via a whole picnic's worth of flans, quiches, trifles and puddings.

"However, the vol-au-vent rose above all the others."
