On CCTV, the Japanese 'killer' of Lindsay Hawker days before murder

Video footage of the man sought for the murder of a British teacher has been released by Japanese police.

Tatsuya Ichihashi was filmed by a security camera in the elevator of his apartment block days before Lindsay Hawker's naked, battered body was found in a sand-filled bath on his balcony.

It may be the same elevator in which Lindsay accompanied him to his flat in Tokyo. The 22-year-old is thought to have gone there to collect payment for an English lesson she had given him in a cafe.

Officers released the footage in the hope it will prompt sightings of the fugitive, seven weeks after Lindsay's murder.

But it raises serious questions about the investigation into her death.

Detectives were quick to release security footage of Lindsay and Ichihashi, 28, in a cafe in the hours before her murder.

Critics have asked whether police are holding back images that show her in the elevator with Ichihashi.

They also questioned whether officers have pictures of him in the lift with the bags of sand used to bury her in the east Tokyo district of Ichikawa.

Police declined to comment on speculation that they were holding back evidence.

But pressure is mounting on them to catch the fugitive.

There are fears that Ichihashi, who is said to be obsessed with Western women, will kill again.

At the Chiba Prefectural Police Headquarters, two miles from the murder scene, a team of 30 police are collating information about Ichihashi's wealthy medical family and his friends.

They are convinced he is receiving help.

The officer in charge of the search, Deputy Superintendent Takeo Terajima, said: "The investigation is continuing but we are still relying on information from the public."

At her funeral in Coventry last month, Lindsay's boyfriend Ryan Garside said: "Now she is gone, life will never be truly wonderful again."
