Most pupils at 1,075 comprehensives do not achieve the Government benchmark of five A* to C grades in any subject.
At a hard core of 15 schools, fewer than one in five reach the minimum standard.
GCSE results out on Thursday are expected to show a further widening of the gulf between pupils at the best and worst-performing schools.
While fewer than 20 per cent of 16-year-olds will manage five good GCSEs at the worst comprehensives, the figure will be well over 90 per cent at the best performers.
Figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats showed the majority of pupils at 34 per cent of state secondaries failed to reach the minimum GCSE standard last summer.
Overall, 59.2 per cent of pupils, or 382,391, achieved the five A* to C yardstick. The Government says 80 per cent should be achieving five good passes.

LibDem schools spokesman David Laws described the situation as "a national disgrace".
GCSE results this week are expected to show a rise in the A and A* grade pass rate from 19.1 per cent last year.
