Owner of dog that savaged girl, 3, goes free

The owner of a "devil dog" which mauled a three-year-old girl — scarring her for life and causing "permanent serious trauma" — has been sentenced to 150 hours of community service.

Zara Tarout was the victim of a vicious attack in Islington last December that left her mother Asia fearing she would bleed to death.

She condemned the sentence for not delivering "justice" as she called for mandatory dog licences and insurance.

"I'm disgusted," Mrs Tarout said. "One hundred and fifty hours is not enough — my poor daughter will serve a lot longer than that."

On December 28, Zara was attacked by two Staffordshire bull terriers, Boss and Magoo, on the Bemerton estate in Barnsbury.

Boss dragged her to the ground, sinking his teeth into her upper thigh. As Zara's mother tried to protect her daughter by throwing her arms around her, she was mauled by the second dog, Magoo, which bit Mrs Tarout on her left arm.

The dogs' owner, Doris Carter, 58, eventually wrestled the dogs away and restrained them. Mother and daughter were taken to University College Hospital for treatment, and Carter also required stitches.

Mrs Tarout said: "She was in surgery for over four hours. Doctors said there would be extensive scarring. Her leg is a mess, and even at three-and-a-half she is self-conscious about wearing skirts. She wouldn't show her legs over the summer, it broke my heart."

At Blackfriars crown court Carter admitted two counts of being in charge of a dog which caused injury while dangerously out of control in a public place. Her son Gerald had been cautioned for the same offence last year.

Ordering the dogs to be put down, Judge David Martineau, said: "You were plainly unable to control them. They are powerful and vicious animals. I have to have regard of the permanent serious trauma that's been suffered by the little girl. You should be banned for life from keeping a dog."

Mrs Tarout said: "I'm glad the dogs will be put down, but there are lots more that need to be registered, and the owners have to know how to handle them. Carter just couldn't handle them both. But it's my daughter who paid the price. I'm disgusted. She is terrified of dogs, has nightmares and wets the bed. It's heartbreaking."
