Paintings show restoration of the Cutty Sark

Paintings recording the restoration of the fire-ravaged Cutty Sark are the highlight of a new exhibition.

Painters from the Wapping Group of Artists have been given unprecedented access to the tea clipper by the Cutty Sark Trust, which is overseeing the ship's restoration after extensive fire damage in May last year.

Their paintings will form part of London, its River and The Cutty Sark, which opens at Guildhall Art Gallery on 2 October.

The WGA was founded in 1946 to record the life of London's docks.

Bert Wright, president of the group, said: "Last year's fire affected us deeply, and we've enjoyed nurturing a relationship with the Cutty Sark Trust, which allowed us to record its conservation project."

Guildhall Art Gallery is in Guildhall Yard, EC2V 5AE. For details call 020 7332 3870.
