Peers to call for scrapping of home packs

Ministers are facing a double defeat in the Lords today over home information packs and the corporate manslaughter Bill.

Tory and Lib-Dem peers have united to condemn the Government for pressing ahead with the packs despite protests from the housing industry.

The opposition parties are confident they can defeat the Government but the vote, on an advisory motion, will not derail the Bill.

Tory local government spokeswoman Baroness Hanham said: "I urge the Government to pause for thought and stop - otherwise they are hurtling down the road towards failure. This is Gordon Brown's first chance to show he listens. Let's see if he does."

Ministers risk another defeat on the corporate manslaughter Bill, which makes it easier to prosecute bosses for fatal accidents at work. Peers are threatening to vote down the Bill a second time unless it is extended to cover deaths in custody. But unions fear the row could see the whole Bill being lost.

"A Bill for dealing with deaths at works is being opportunistically hijacked by the Opposition as a backhanded way of defeating a Bill they never even considered adopting themselves," said the GMB.
