'Penalise drivers who stray into cycle lanes'

Drivers should be punished for using cycle lanes, say a majority of motorists.

About 65 per cent want motorists fined for veering into the lanes, a problem highlighted by the Evening Standard's Safer Cycling campaign.

A further 59 per cent said they should be fined for blocking cycle "advanced stop" bays at traffic lights, areas enabling cyclists to pull away safely when the signals turn green.

However, six out of 10 oppose plans by Transport for London to make drivers of "gas-guzzlers" pay higher congestion charges while drivers of smaller cars pay nothing.

The Auto Trader magazine survey of 3,300 motorists also shows that nine out of 10 are opposed to the Government's plans to proceed with road pricing.

Jonathan Williams of Auto Trader said: "These findings show that Londoners are fed up being persecuted by the Mayor, TfL and the Government just for driving in the capital.

"They are aware of the rights and wrongs of driving in the city and respect the cycle and bus lanes but to make them spend up to £25 a day to drive is just too much."

Plans by London councils to charge vehicles higher parking fees according to how much carbon dioxide they emit when their engines are running were also opposed by motorists, despite keen backing by green organisations.
