Pensioner who hasn't had a crash in 76 years writes off two Porsches in seconds with his old Fiesta

If his 76-year blemish-free driving record had to come to an end, then it could hardly have done so in more spectacular fashion.

With not even a minor prang to his name in half a million miles of motoring, 93-year-old Jack Higgs and his £600 Ford Fiesta managed to demolish two Porsches causing £60,000 of damage.

The retired church minister lost control as he reversed outside the Porsche showroom next to his home, hitting a red Carrera II, which acted as a ramp and flipped the Fiesta car over on to a silver 911.

Shocked: Jack Higgs, 93, hadn't had an accident since he started driving when he was 17

Alerted by the sound of crunching metal, staff rushed out to find Mr Higgs hanging upside down by his seat-belt in his overturned car.

He escaped without a scratch, but yesterday declared that the disaster had convinced him he should hang up his ignition key forever.

Porsche dealer Dave Coombs was surprisingly philosophical about the damage done to the cars, both of which are privately owned and had been left in the garage for servicing. One has been declared a write-off while the other will need extensive repairs.

Crash: Jack Higgs crashed his Ford Fiesta into both these Porsches when his car shot backwards as he tried to park

'We could hardly believe our eyes at the damage,' he said.

'He walked out without a scratch, but the Porsches were a real mess. There was glass and bits of broken metal everywhere - but Jack is such a gentleman he asked for a sweeping brush to help clear them up.

'We walked him to his home for a cup of sweet tea while the breakdown trucks arrived to tow away the cars.

'I'm not too concerned about the cars - what matters is that Jack survived which is incredible considering his great age.'

Mr Higgs's 13-year-old blue Fiesta is also a write-off. His insurance claim for the damage to all three cars will be his first ever.

The widower is well-known to garage staff as he lives next to the RS Porsche base in Penarth, near Cardiff. He is allowed to drive across the forecourt to access his garage, and has been doing so for the last 45 years without a hitch.

Shock: Dave Coombes from RS Porsche surveys the damage

Mr Higgs, who has never had to sit a driving test because they weren't introduced until 1935, said: 'I can't understand it, nothing like this has happened to me before.

'I've been driving since I was 17, have a clean licence and have never even picked up so much as a parking ticket.

'I just don't know what happened except that I lost control as I was reversing and suddenly I had hit the cars. The next thing I knew I was hanging upside down in my car thanking my lucky stars I was still alive.'

When Mr Higgs started driving in 1930 a new car could be bought for £120 and petrol was one shilling and seven pence (8p) a gallon.

His first car was a Ford, although he can't remember the model, and he has always been faithful to the brand.

The retired Pentecostal minister was given the all-clear after being checked by paramedics.

He said: 'It was a miracle I got out alive. But that's it - the end of my driving career, I'm never driving again.

'I'll have to get lifts or go on the bus in future.'
