But the lamb only sank deeper and deeper - as the tide behind it rose higher and higher.

Luckily, help was at hand. Coastguards from Burnham-On-Sea, Somerset, waded in and rescued the creature from certain death.

They were alerted by a caller who saw the lamb stranded in the mud flats beside the River Parrett at West Huntspill.

Burnham Coastguard officer Steve Bird said: 'Special safety boards were used to reach the animal and one of the team carry the lamb to safety, much to the relief of the grateful farmer.

‘The animal would certainly have drowned on the next high tide.'
