Pictured: Little brother of Jimmy Mizen's heartbreak at his funeral
20 June 2008
At just eight years old, it is too much for murdered Jimmy Mizen's youngest brother, George, to absorb let alone bear.
He stands to the side at Jimmy's funeral today, his face crumpled with grief as he holds in front of him a picture of the 16-year-old as a careless child.
The altar boy, who has another seven siblings, died last month after his throat was allegedly slashed with a glass dish after an argument in a bakery near his home.
Mourning: George Mizen, 8, at the funeral of his older brother Jimmy, 16, today. The altar boy was murdered last month 500 yards from his home
He had been out to buy his first ever lottery ticket to celebrate turning 16 days earlier and had only nipped into the shop on his way back to buy a snack.
Today, with his brother's nickname 'Jimbo' scrawled up his arms, George looked on as his mother Margaret and father Barry desperately tried to comfort each other.
The whole family stoically walked behind the hearse - driven by Jimmy's uncle - as it wound its way from the family home in Lee, south-east London, to the Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
Poignantly, it had to pass the very spot outside the Three Cooks bakery where Jimmy bled to death on May 12 just 500 yards from his own front door.
Solemn: The funeral procession passed the bakery where Jimmy's throat was allegedly slashed with a glass dish on May 12 as it made its way to church
Struggle: Five of his brothers and a nephew carried his coffin
A dozen colourful bouquets were laid alongside a white star in a floral tribute on top of the hearse.
When the procession arrived at the church, parish priest Father Edward Perera enveloped Mr and Mrs Mizen in a hug.
As a show of family unity, their oldest son Danny, 30, was wearing jeans with 'The M Team' written across the back pocket.
It was he who led his Jimmy's four other older brothers, Billy, 28, Tommy, 26, Bobby, 24, and Harry, 18, and their nephew James, 19, in carrying the wicker coffin to the altar while Jimmy's schoolfriends formed a guard of honour.
Music composed by Hans Zimmer played out to the tearful mourners in the church and was relayed to the crowds outside through a loud speaker system.
The family had delayed the funeral until now on purpose so that Jimmy's classmates from St Thomas More Catholic school in Eltham could finish their GCSEs.
Tragic: Jimmy Mizen, left, and his parents Margaret and Barry clinging onto each other today as they walk to the church for his funeral
Mrs Mizen, 55, struggled to hold back the tears as she read a eulogy during the service, which was followed by a private burial.
She told the congregation: 'I never told him off - apart from saying "put your socks in the dirty washing basket".
'I can't believe we are here now. He really was our beautiful son.'
Her husband followed her with his own tribute, describing Jimmy as a 'lovely boy' who had his mother's smile.
'I have some really good memories and I will keep them always,' he said.
'I think with Jimmy I don't have any regrets about what we spoke about or about saying anything to Jimmy. Maybe for longer, but I don't regret ... He was a lovely boy.
'There has been a lot of talk about Jimmy's smile and I know where he got it from. The first thing that attracted me to Margaret was her beautiful smile.'
Hundreds of people turned out for the funeral in south-east London today
Jimmy's six brothers each also made a personal tribute to him during the service.
His sister Samantha, 21, who has Down's syndrome, laid a bouquet of flowers at the scene.
After the ceremony, the family embraced as the coffin was loaded back onto the hearse and driven away for a private burial.
Mrs Mizen was clearly distraught, shaking her head and holding it in her hands as she wept.
Jimmy, who turned 16 the day before his death, was murdered after he refused to have a fight with his attacker outside the Three Cooks bakery.
The man went berserk, smashing up the shop before attacking him with a broken piece of glass.
Jimmy, one of nine children, bled to death at the scene in the arms of an older brother Tommy.
He would usually have been helping out in his father's shop but had been given the Saturday off because it had been his 16th birthday the day before.
His parents, Barry and Margaret, have described him as a 'great, gorgeous and loving boy who was loved by everyone'.
Jake Fahri, 19, has been charged with Jimmy's murder and remanded in custody. He will appear at the Old Bailey on August 21.
Mrs Mizen, 55, says she feels no anger toward her son's attacker and felt sorry for his parents.
