With a wave and a broad smile, Baroness Thatcher swept out of Chequers yesterday after a nostalgic visit as a guest of Gordon Brown.

She was given a tour of the grounds she loved when the house in Buckinghamshire was her official country residence during her 11 years as Prime Minister.

Mr Brown is believed to have issued the invitation after Lady Thatcher asked him how the gardens had changed since her last visit in 1995.

It follows her controversial invitation to Downing Street last year.

Last month, Lady Thatcher’s daughter Carol spoke for the first time about her mother’s fight against dementia.
