In the old days, the responsibility of being mayor could weigh on a man as heavily as the golden chains of office.

But as a modern type of civic leader, Marcus Hart prides himself on lightening up a little.

Perhaps that is why the 30-year-old mayor of Kidderminster is pictured on Facebook scaling a lamp-post on a boozy night out with friends.

The wrongly-spelled caption under the picture reads: "Causing havock in Kidderminster. A few to many to drink...lol" (laugh out loud).

One friend even commented on the photo in a written post on the mayor's web page saying "RE: Photo Adam's birthday, you lot are now on pub watch."

Unfortunately for Mr Hart, not many of his colleagues on Wyre Forest District Council seem to get the joke.

Last night, there were calls for him to resign amid claims that he had set a bad example for the young people of Kidderminster.

In the photo published on the social networking website he stands on two metal bollards for support while clutching the lamp-post as his two friends pose underneath him.

Mr Hart, a criminal lawyer, is also deputy leader of the council and a Tory county councillor.

Yesterday, he denied acting in an "irresponsible or anti-social way" during the night out with friends.

But independent councillor Brian Glass said the mayor should resign.

"There is concern in towns all around the country about drink-fuelled anti-social behaviour," he said. "It is totally unacceptable and it doesn't give me much confidence as to his ability to carry out his job."

Mr Hart, who was elected Kidderminster's youngest mayor last month, insisted he had done nothing wrong.

He said the picture was taken last August and insisted he had not written the caption.

"I had had a few beers with friends and was just enjoying myself like I am entitled to," he said. "I was not acting in a yobbish or drunken manner.

"People have told me how great it is to have a youthful mayor and it would be a sad state of affairs if they saw this photo and thought I was acting in an anti-social way."
