They are rare, shy and tree dwellers, making them very hard to spot.
But conservationists have not given up on the pine marten despite the last confirmed sighting being three years ago.
To entice any remaining creatures into the open, they are leaving out jam and peanut butter sandwiches in four secret locations.

Cameras have been hidden nearby to snap any creatures breaking an infrared beam. The experiment aims to identify areas where pine martens have clung on to help improve their chances of survival.

A handful of unconfirmed sightings suggest any remaining in England are limited to North Yorkshire, Northumbria, the Lake District, Derbyshire and Staffordshire.
