Plane crazy! Ryanair's irritating theme song that serenades passengers as they board

Travelling light is the best policy for air passengers in the 21st century.

But anyone flying with Ryanair may well be advised to make sure they also include a pair of ear plugs in their hand luggage from now on.

Not content with playing a strident trumpet blast every time a plane lands on time and bombarding passengers with adverts for vodka/rum/whiskey/cognac in plastic bags, the budget airline has now begun 'serenading' passengers with a new disco tune with lyrics about the joys of flying Ryanair.

Love it or loathe it, the new jingle - usually the musical backdrop to passengers scrambling for their seats - is set to become the soundtrack to this year's holidays.

Ryanair has begun 'serenading' passengers with a new disco tune

Described by some as 'Vengaboys meets Crazy Frog', the infuriatingly catchy tune divides opinion.

Some can't stand it - others want it released as a single and wonder if they could get it as a mobile phone ringtone.

The lyrics to 'Let's Fly Ryanair' encourage passengers to 'sit down, relax, time to strap in, buy a juice for little Johnny and get yourself a gin.'

In a bid to further boost its income, the song also reminds passengers that it has "sweets, sweets, lots of goodies on the trolley for you, whatever it is that you need of us, the friendly cabin crew."

Despite its dubious musical merit, Ryanair has strongly defended the song which it first introduced across its fleet - on April Fool's Day.

The company said: "We've had a great response from our passengers and have even heard news of conga lines forming in the aisles."

But this enthusiastic reaction was not shared by all the Ryanair passengers the Irish Daily Mail spoke to.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary is not the artistic brains behind the song, according to the airline

Some complained the music is far too loud and intrusive.

Passenger Emily Byrne said the tune woke her up after she fell asleep on a Dublin to London flight on Monday morning.

"It was loud enough to wake everyone up. Someone behind me said it was so that people would be awake to buy things from the trolley," she said.

Frequent flyer Jeremy Guest, emerging from a Manchester to Dublin flight, added: The music puts my teeth on "edge. It sounds like that Crazy Frog ringtone - but is far, far more irritating."

And if the passengers are not universally welcoming the song, spare a thought for the cabin crew.

One senior stewardess on a flight out of Paris Beauvais last week said: "Imagine what it's like for us listening to it day in, day out. But at least I get to choose whether I play it or not."

The song is a superslick production, complete with layered drumbeats and catchy synth hooks that wouldn't disgrace an Eighties electro-pop outfit.

But who wrote it and recorded it is a mystery.

The airline would only confirm the tune was not an 'in-house' production - unlike their infamous charity calendar featuring semi-clad stewardesses.

They also ruled out chief executive Michael O'Leary as the artistic brains behind the mini opus.

The introduction of the jingle comes hard on the heels of Ryanair trumpeting - literally - its admittedly impressive punctuality record.

When a jet lands on time, before the wheels have even stopped turning, a voice tells passengers: "Congratulations, you've landed aboard another on-time Ryanair flight." Then there's a trumpet coda and canned applause.

Mr O'Leary has brazenly admitted in the past that the bombardment of announcements aboard his airline's flights is designed to sell, sell, sell - everything from scratchcards to perfume and gadgets, and squeeze a few more cents out of his costconscious customers.

You can bet that if he thought there was a couple of quid in it, the new song would be racing up the pop charts... buy one, get one free.
