Plaques stolen from crematorium found dumped in sacks

Two sacks containing 75 brass and lead plaques taken from Enfield crematorium were discovered at an industrial estate in Fieldings Road, Cheshunt.
They did not include the brass plaque stolen from the grave of Corporal Darren Bonner, who was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in May last year, as reported in the Standard last week.
The sacks were discovered on Friday morning by John Jones-Fuller of Falcon Motors in Cheshunt. He said: "We had 15 catalytic converters stolen two weeks ago and 12 about a month before. Taking from cars is one thing but stealing from someone's grave is disgusting."
Mr Jones-Fuller, who lives in Enfield, where Cpl Bonner's funeral took place in June last year, added: "I remember the funeral and then I saw the story in the papers - it was really sickening finding them."
Police have returned the stolen plaques to Haringey council, which manages the crematorium.
A council spokesman said: "We have stepped up security with dog patrols. We are looking at adding more CCTV. We work closely with families affected to get plaques replaced and provide good-quality plaques made from acrylic which are less likely to be stolen."
