Playing a Wii can help you lose weight

Playing Nintendo's Wii console is as effective as "moderately intense" exercise, scientists said today.

Researchers studied the energy used by players of several popular Wii sports games, which have already received the backing of the Department of Health. They found a Yoga game to be the most effective, followed by boxing.

"The range of energy expenditure in these active games is sufficient to prevent or to improve obesity and lifestyle-related disease," said Dr Motohiko Miyachi, of the National Institute of Health and Nutrition in Tokyo, who led the research.

This month the Department of Health backed Nintendo's Wii Fit Plus, allowing it to use the NHS's Change4Life campaign logo.

"Active video games — where kids need to jump up and down or dance about as part of the game — are a great way to get kids moving more," said a DoH spokesman. "Bits of activity like this, throughout the day can add up to the 60 active minutes kids need."
