Metropolitan Police received almost 1,000 calls an hour yesterday, prompting officers to appeal for the public not to use 999 calls to report trivial matters.

Commander Simon O'Brien, who headed the force's response, said: "We have been receiving 230 calls every 15 minutes across London. That sort of volume is what we receive on New Year's Eve.

"Inclement weather normally leads to a slight drop in certain types of crime because a lot more people are inside. However, we have had fairly normal levels of incidents to deal with, as well as the additional snow-related ones.

"There have been a considerable amount of disorder and snowball fights reported, and we would remind people to use the 999 system for matters of utmost emergency." No arrests were reported for snowball fights.
