PM claims Labour has 'saved' the NHS

Tony Blair will today claim Labour has "saved" the NHS - despite critics citing major failings in the service.

The Prime Minister will also urge his detractors to recognise the successes in the NHS over the last decade, such as shorter waiting lists, huge investment and 154 new or planned hospitals.

But the ongoing row about junior doctors' training and the threat of strikes over plans to stagger pay rises will thwart his efforts.

A decade to the day since warning voters they had "24 hours to save the NHS", Mr Blair will list progress in cardiac care, cancer treatment, emergency services and mental health as some of the successes in the service.

"We have improved care across the board by putting patients first and their needs in the driving seat," he will say at health think tank The King's Fund in London.

The announcement comes two days after junior doctors called for the resignation of Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt over the "shambolic" reform of medical training.

The Conservatives say during Labour's time in power, the NHS has gone on a "circular and wasteful journey" back towards policies of the last Tory government.

A rival report will be published claiming there have been failures on issues such as mixed-sex wards, hospitalacquired infections and dentistry.
