The Prime Minister made the barbed comment at a recent BBC meeting.
Offered refreshment, he is said to have joked: "Can the BBC afford to give me a cup of tea? I thought they'd spent all their money on Jonathan Ross's salary."

But behind the quip it is thought Mr Brown was making a serious point about the salaries of stars who are paid from licence fees.
The PM is believed to have been unimpressed by the TV presenter's boast last month that he was worth '1,000 BBC journalists', after 2,500 job cuts were announced.
