Chief Constable Ian Latimer: 'annoyed with himself'
The police chief, who was reportedly driving his force Range Rover when he was caught, is now facing a £60 fine and three points on his licence after being given notice of prosecution yesterday.
He said: "I made a mistake. On July 1 this year, in daylight on a clear open stretch of road on the A9, I miscalculated my speed, which was seen to be a maximum of 72mph within a 60mph limit.
"I am annoyed with myself and accept full responsibility. Perhaps this will act as a warning to others.
"It can be seen quite rightly that the chief constable, in his own force area, is as accountable and subject to the law as any other individual."
Mr Latimer started his career when he joined Merseyside Police in 1981, having spent several years in the banking and finance industry.
His early working life was spent in Liverpool, where he rose to the rank of chief superintendent as head of operations in 1997.
He moved south to take up the role of assistant chief constable with the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary in 1999.
And in September 2001, he was appointed to his current post as chief constable of Northern Constabulary and is responsible for policing in the the north Scottish Highland.
Throughout his career he has worked on a wide range of issues, including police response to bomb threats, the fuel crisis and the foot-and-mouth outbreak.
His present contract is due to end in September 2011.
