Shabir Hussain is demanding a £500,000 payout from the Met after he claims he was unfairly denied a promotion
A senior Asian police officer alleging racial discrimination is demanding 'substantially' more than £500,000 compensation, it emerged yesterday.
Commander Shabir Hussain, 45, wants the huge payout as compensation for allegedly being unfairly denied promotion by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair.
Mr Hussain has told an employment tribunal that Sir Ian had sidelined Asian and black detectives to surround himself with a 'golden circle' of hand-picked favourites.
When the case began this week, his lawyers refused to disclose how much he was seeking.
His demands are revealed in documents concerning the case and a source told the Mail: 'It is substantially more than £500,000.
As Mr Hussain is claiming racial discrimination, there is no cap on what he can demand.
'Should the Met lose the case, there could be one hell of a bill.'
Another of the Met's most senior officers is considering whether he should also sue.
The National Black Police Association claims evidence of discrimination against Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur is compelling.
NBPA president Ali Dizaei yesterday accompanied Mr Ghaffur to a meeting with Sir Ian who strongly denies discrimination.
Later a Met spokesman said the force 'wishes to resolve the matter as quickly as possible through mediation and will be working urgently to put arrangements in place to enable such a process to commence'.
