A police investigation is under way after a Conservative MP knocked over a cyclist with his 4x4 outside Parliament.
Chelmsford West Conservative MP Simon Burns collided with the male cyclist as he drove his Range Rover out of the House of Commons.
The collision sent the cyclist into the air before he landed face down outside the gates yesterday evening.
The man, in his twenties, was airlifted to Royal London Hospital with serious injuries but is now in a stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.
An environment protester in Parliament Square, who witnessed the accident, said: "The car came out pretty fast and he obviously didn't see the cyclist who was just going along with the traffic.
"The cyclist tried to brake but his front wheel locked. He went over his handlebars and hit the wing of the car before falling on the ground in front of the car.
"I called for an ambulance and the police from the Parliament gates came out. The cyclist was still breathing, but he looked badly injured. The man in the car got out and stood by the side as the paramedics arrived. He didn't go up to the cyclist."
Parliament Square was closed to traffic following the accident outside the Carriage Gate entrance at around 6pm.
Mr Burns was breathalysed at the scene with the result proving negative.
Currently an Opposition Whip, Mr Burns held the post of shadow health minister from 2001 to 2005, appointed by Iain Duncan Smith and retained on the frontbench by Michael Howard.
Speaking from his constituency home last night, the MP said he was on his way home from the Commons when the collision occurred.
Mr Burns said: "As there is a police investigation currently under way, I have been advised not to say anything."
A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "A collision occurred as a 4x4 left the main gates to the House of Commons. The vehicle stopped at the scene, the male driver was uninjured.
"The cyclist's injuries are not thought to be life threatening or life changing."
