Police race adviser wins apology over arrest

A man who lectured police on race issues has won a four-year battle for justice after being wrongly arrested by the force he advised.

Alioune Haynes was asked to speak to Kent police on the subject of diversity awareness. But his advice was not heeded when he and an off-duty black police officer were singled out at a nightclub in Chatham weeks later.

The two men were strip-searched after the club was raided, but were found not to be carrying any drugs or weapons and were released.

Mr Haynes, 31, who is also a part-time DJ, has been awarded £8,500 in compensation and received a written apology following the raid in March 2006.

He said: "To constantly be stopped and searched, accused of stealing your own car, watching and hearing about it happening to friends, family and members of the community over a period of years is a horrible thing.

"To watch a black police officer humiliated in public through no fault of his own is a difficult thing to deal with."

Two officers were due to appear before a disciplinary panel in connection with the arrest but the hearing was halted in June 2008 for legal
reasons.

Allyn Thomas, Assistant Chief Constable of Kent police, wrote to Mr Haynes saying: "Please accept our sincerest apologies in relation to these events and we trust that you can now put the matter behind you."
