Police to blitz youth crime

Police have launched a two-week operation targeting the capital's 500 most prolific young offenders.

Operation Kartel, being run in 11 boroughs in south and east London, is timed to coincide with the half-term holiday.

Police will deploy more officers on trains and buses, run high-visibility patrols and use metal detector arches to check for weapons such as knives.

They will also carry out "weapon sweeps" in public places such as parks where children are known to hide items such as knives and baseball bats for use in gang fights. Officers working with British Transport Police and immigration officials will target teenagers who have been identified by local officers as the worst offenders. Detective Chief Superintendent Barry Norman of the Met's violent crime directorate said: "We will be out there in some considerable force at a time when young people are on the streets but we are also trying to get people into activities to encourage them away from crime.

"The operation is also aimed at safeguarding young people who are more likely to be victims of crime."

So far this year three teenagers have been stabbed to death while there were sharp increases in the number of killings, burglaries and attacks carried out in the last 12 months by offenders aged 17 or under.
