Police to patrol buses in central London

Police are to be deployed on buses to protect and reassure passengers.

Transport for London has said 35 officers will patrol buses in Wandsworth, and it has plans to introduce similar "bus squads" in all central London boroughs.

There are already 21 Safer Transport Teams working on buses in outer London. They are credited with helping to reduce bus-related crime by more than 10 per cent.

The Wandsworth teams, made up of full-time police and community support officers, will be assigned to routes according to police intelligence, said TfL.

Mayor Ken Livingstone added: "The teams in the outer boroughs have played a major role in reducing crime on London's buses. These teams will be highly visible [and] provide a reassuring presence for Londoners and visitors."

A report by the London Assembly's transport committee in January revealed a 15 per cent increase in the number of crimes on all London buses since 2004, with teenage anti-social behaviour of particular concern. It also found passengers felt less safe on buses than on any other form of public transport.

The most problematic routes were all north of the river.
