Police union to review ban on striking

The Government faces the prospect of further public-sector strikes after the police threatened to look again at industrial action.

A senior Police Federation chairman warned officers had been "pushed too far" over a pay deal which they say actually means a real-terms cut.

Simon Payne, Warwickshire branch chairman, called for fresh debate over whether - despite being an essential service - police should be allowed by law to strike.

The warning came as prison officers' leaders prepared for talks today with Justice Secretary Jack Straw after thousands of prison staff walked out over the phasing of a 2.5 per cent pay rise.

Pc Payne told BBC Radio's Today programme: "No police officer wishes to take industrial action, even if they could, but like the prison officers we have now been pushed too far... A debate should now take place where it should be openly discussed to allow police officers to legally take industrial action."
