Staff morale at 'rock bottom' in Eric Pickles' department

02 February 2012
MORALE at Eric Pickles's department has plunged to the lowest levels in Whitehall over the last year, an official survey showed today.
Civil servants at the Department for Communities and Local Government reported growing dissatisfaction with every area of their work including "leadership" and "managing change", the body's "objectives and purpose", and "resources and workload".
Overall "employee engagement" fell by eight points last year to 40 per cent, the Civil Service People survey of about 300,000 government employees found. The average across Whitehall was 56 per cent.
Labour blamed Mr Pickles's leadership style. Shadow communities and local government secretary Hilary Benn said: "It's no wonder Eric Pickles's staff morale has reached rock bottom when his advisers brief against them."
But a spokesman for the department said: "These results reflect a challenging time for the department as it has undergone significant change over the last year."
