Camden council says the area will be updated from a slightly shabby shallow concrete pool into an inviting meeting place for residents and visitors.

The work is due to be completed by 2010. Plans include the introduction of heritage-style street lights, Yorkstone paving around the pond and seating.

There will also be water planting to reduce the levels of algae and pollutants which plague the pond.

Councillor Chris Knight said: "With the road cycling events of the 2012 Olympics passing this point, there has never been a better time to see this area transformed into a space that everyone can enjoy."

Originally called Horse Pond, Whitestone Pond is one of the highest points in London. It lies between Hampstead Heath and Hampstead Village.

The plans have been put together by Camden council with the Heath and Hampstead Society, City of London and Transport for London.

The decision to go ahead with the work follows a six-week consultation, including residents' opinions.
