Portrait of a Gordonary man

Sitting on a crowded Piccadilly Line Tube train, Gordon Brown puts the finishing touches to the speech that launched his successful bid to replace Tony Blair as Prime Minister.

Impatient to reach his destination, the Chancellor had ditched his Government car in heavy traffic to take the London Underground.

The capital's commuters barely register his presence. Only Sue Nye, his political secretary, on his right, seems to notice photographer Tom Stoddart taking this shot.

The photo was taken on May 11 as Mr Brown made his way to Central London to launch his campaign.

It is one of a series of candid shots of the Chancellor taken by Stoddart, who ten years earlier tracked Tony Blair during the Election campaign.

Last month the photographer travelled with Mr Brown as he toured Britain.

Other pictures show a smiling Chancellor sitting with his wife Sarah on a window seat in the Brighton home of a Labour activist as he prepares for an "audience with" debate in the town's arts festival.

Pictured on a sunny Sunday afternoon, he looks relaxed and, in contrast to his usual businesslike image, is casually dressed.

He is also captured taking a call on his mobile leaning in the doorway of the house, one of several images of him deep in phone conversation with advisers.
