The first cash machines to dispense euros and U.S. dollars in Britain went on trial yesterday.
The Post Office has installed hole-in-the-wall machines issuing foreign notes in selected branches.
But if successful, they will be opened in all branches.
Euros and U.S. dollars can now be withdrawn from Post Office cash machines
Rival banks and buildings are sure to follow if the idea is a hit with holidaymakers about to go abroad.
Britons took out £7.1billion last year from cash machines overseas, often paying up to £2 in fees each time they made a withdrawal.
The Post Office says its euros and dollars will be commission-free and at the same exchange rate as offered over the counter.
The trial branches are in Ashford, Harrogate, Fareham, Bristol, Basingstoke, Solihull, Harlow, City of London, Birmingham, Stockport, Crawley, Trafalgar Square in London and Dartford.
They will accept any debit card in the Link network.
