'Postcode' gang rivalry suspected in street murder

A schoolboy stabbed to death on a busy street may have been the victim of London's "postcode" gang rivalry, community leaders say.

Nassirudeen Osawe, 16, was stabbed in front of afternoon shoppers in Upper Street, Islington after a gang from neighbouring Hackney decided he had given them a dirty look, witnesses said.

A 17-year-old friend was also stabbed, but his injuries are not critical. Detectives yesterday arrested two more suspects - aged 17 and 18 - in connection with Thursday's murder. The 17-year-old was today in police custody, while the 18-year-old was bailed to return in mid-January. An 18-year-old arrested on Thursday has been released on police bail, and another 17-year-old was released without charge.

Police are investigating whether Hackney's Shakespeare gang, whose territory includes Stoke Newington's Milton Garden Estate near Nassirudeen's home in Highbury, was involved. Reverend Joyce Daley, a street pastor in Hackney, said: "Postcode gangs are a real problem. Something as simple as just crossing the road and going into another postcode can be a threat."

A-level student Nassirudeen is the 27th teenager killed in London this year. Witnesses should call 020 8345 3865 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
