Postmen's fury over boss's £1m payday

Union leaders stepped up calls for a national postal strike yesterday after it emerged that Royal Mail boss Adam Crozier was paid nearly £1million last year.

The chief executive was said to have collected a bonus of £370,000 on top of his £615,000 salary after leading a radical reorganisation that will slash more than 30,000 jobs.

Details of the payout emerged as managers struggle to head off industrial action by postmen who are angry at staff cuts and a 2.5 per cent pay offer.

Voting in a strike ballot has already been completed, with the result due to be announced on Thursday.

The Communication Workers Union said it was confident of winning the ballot, which could trigger the first national postal strike since 1996.

Deputy general secretary Dave Ward added: "Postal workers will be horrified to discover that the very man who offers them a pay rise which is below the rate of inflation is earning such huge bonuses himself.

"It is absolutely certain that if the news of this bonus had come earlier that would only have cemented sentiment in favour of strike action."

Details of Mr Crozier's pay for the last financial year will be revealed in the Royal Mail's annual accounts and financial results, the publication of which has been delayed.
